Being Mentally Strong

Grit. Resilience. Mental toughness. We hear a lot about these attributes.  Of course we have an abundance of strategies and techniques for developing psychological resilience.

When most people set out to become fit, they’re thinking about their physical fitness. Getting in better physical shape tops the list for many.

In this case, if more people focused on their mental fitness, however, they’d likely become more successful in achieving the goals they set for themselves – physical fitness or otherwise.

Building mental muscle is the key to self-discipline, delayed gratification, grit, and perseverance.  These are the skills you will need to become the best mental version of yourself.

We all would like to be able to deal with life’s ups and downs with strength and grace, and learning to manage your emotions is another important part of becoming mentally strong.

Keep in mind, being mentally strong doesn’t mean you don’t experience pain or suffering – resilience is often learned when one is faced with an extremely painful situation.

What it does mean is that you learn to rebuild or “bounce back” from these experiences.

Also, becoming mentally strong isn’t something that happens overnight. We have to work hard to accomplish this.

If you can start seeing every curveball life throws at you as a chance to practice being mentally stronger, you’ll begin accruing wisdom and clarity that you can put to the test when things really get hard.

Until next time…

An Attitude of Gratitude

What does it mean to have a grateful attitude? It means making it a habit to express thankfulness and appreciation in all parts of our lives, on a regular basis, for both the big and small things alike.

Normally, we think about gratitude and giving during holidays, but in essence, having an Attitude of Gratitude should be recognized daily.

Wouldn’t you like these feelings to last all year long?

Just imagine how it would be to feel proud, thankful, and joyful on an ongoing basis, not only during the holiday season.

One of the major steps in that direction is developing an “Attitude of Gratitude”. To cultivate a grateful mindset would allow you to view things in a different light.

For example, if you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough. But, if you focus on what you DO have, you will come to realize you have so much more to be grateful for.

Don’t compare yourself to others, but give yourself credit for the big and small things you have in your life.

So try adopting an overall grateful mindset. It may take some work, but having an “Attitude of Gratitude” is one of the most impactful habits for a fulfilling and healthy life.

Until Next Season…

How many of us really thought about what it means to have “Compassion”? But first, I would like to define it.

One definition of compassion is someone who shows kindness or empathy.
It can also be defined as sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.

What does compassion mean to you?

We often think of showing compassion for someone, by giving a gift or money.

However, let us consider a definition which does not require others to suffer?

What if compassion is simply the active expression of acceptance for people just as they are? If it entailed a state of mind where there is no judgement about a situation or a person.

True compassion is being able to look at others without expectations that they should be any different. However, we may still hold a vision of possibilities for them, but we don’t have to use it as a standard of compassion for rejecting where they are right now.

With the holiday season approaching, some may feel a need to show compassion to those they deem “Misfortunate”.

Giving a gift, (monetary or otherwise) or volunteering at a local shelter, are admirable ways to show compassion for others. Although, sometimes the best action you can take to help alleviate someone’s emotional suffering, is to simply be present with your attention on the person.

To just quietly sit and listen to someone sends a powerful message of compassion towards them. This simple act may cultivate a seed of change that can bring a new perspective.

However, we cannot ignore the physical needs of others’ as well. For example, if someone is suffering from hunger, then it is more appropriate to provide nourishing food. If someone is in emotional pain, then bring your love and unconditional acceptance.

Showing compassion ( not just during the holiday season), is the ultimate and most meaningful embodiment of emotional maturity. It is only through compassion that one may achieve the highest peak and deepest reach in his or her search for self-fulfillment.

Until next time.

Soft Skills – The Gateway to Success

Hello Everyone,

It’s been quite awhile since my last post, but wanted to get back to writing again.

I would like to introduce to you my new blog. I started this blog to bring awareness to the importance of utilizing soft skills, and it’s impact.

Having excellent soft skills, can help us to succeed in many aspects of our lives. From interacting with  co-workers, to resolving family conflicts. These skills can take you further in your professional, as well as your personal relationships.

Research has shown that employers are now looking to hire candidates that have soft skills (or interpersonal skills) over technical skills.

The theory is, the employer wants to know if you’re able to get along well with others, and if you can communicate in an upbeat and engaging manner.

It also refers to what is called “The Like Factor”.  In other words, will you fit into the  companies overall mission.

Employers also want to know if you will treat clients respectfully, provide quality customer service and invest effort into your work.

These are just a few of the soft skills that I will be touching on in the future.  In my next post, I will outline ways to “Successful Communication”.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading my blog, and feel free to comment as well.

Until next time.
